Storing, managing, and accessing data affordably and reliably is the ultimate competitive advantage.
Early adopters of Cloud 1.0 technologies provided by Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure have found that the cost difference between their on-premises vs. cloud storage in particular were really no savings at all, particularly at the volumes of data that media companies deal with, particularly given the nature of the production work, requiring both ingress (free) and egress (per gigabyte charges combined with API requests).
Even archiving projects using Cloud Storage 1.0 like S3 or Glacier has been punishingly expensive and slow, leaving most companies to continue to use LTO and offsite physical backups as their standard process.
If you were waiting for the cloud to catch up with your media production and archive needs, the time has finally arrived! Transform your production work-in-progress and media archiving with an open, high performance, cloud ecosystem, with Wasabi hot cloud storage as the foundation.
Few industries pose as many storage challenges as media and entertainment (M&E). Today, there is more video content being produced than ever, and production projects run around the clock to push television series and blockbuster movies to audiences as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, video quality just keeps getting better with higher resolutions, higher frame rates and high dynamic range (HDR) processing —which means video file sizes have grown exponentially.
The storage ramifications are significant. Several petabytes of storage may be required for a complete stereoscopic digital movie project at 4K resolution. And production work at 8K is now under way. By the next decade, total video captured for a single high-end digital production could be hundreds of petabytes, according to analyst firm Coughlin Associates.
In fact, Coughlin forecasts that cloud storage for the M&E industry alone will grow about 13.3x between 2017 and 2023 (from 5.1 to 68.2 exabytes), and overall object storage capacity for media and entertainment will grow about 4.9x between 2017 and 2023, from 10.4 to 51.6 exabytes.
That’s a boatload of data. You need to store all that raw footage, rough cuts and finished product in an a highly secure and reliable environment without breaking the bank. And in today’s fast-paced digital world, you need to be able to access all your assets as fast as possible to meet deadlines and stay within schedules and budgets. That’s because the speed that production teams can store, retrieve and collaborate on projects will play a big role in determining their success.
How Wasabi Changes The Game For Media Companies
Wasabi provides the cloud capacity to store all your content files—from raw footage to finished product, ready for distribution to archived libraries for future reference. And you store it all at one low price. How low is “low?” Compared to AWS S3, Wasabi is 80% cheaper. Wasabi also does away with all the confusing storage tiers typical of other cloud services. Instead, we offer a a single tier of high-performance storage at one, easily budgetable flat rate. We also have no charges for egress or API requests like the other cloud services, which penalize you for using your own content. Add it all up, and Wasabi is the one cloud storage service that meets all your needs for production work-in-progress, backups and archiving.
For M&E companies, multimedia petabytes pile up in a heartbeat. Why pay 80% more compared to AWS S3 to store them?
Lightening fast performance means more time editing and producing and less time waiting for your files to load or be delivered.
Eleven nines (99.999999999%) of object durability and immutable buckets protect your valuable content from accidental changes, deletions and ransomware.
Hot cloud storage means no pricing tiers based on how frequently and quickly you need to access your content. Because you never know when you might need to yank that old movie or TV pilot out of storage for another look. With Wasabi, you simply get fast access to all content at the same low price.
Now you can manage your entire media lifecycle from capture to edit to delivery on a unified, automated platform. Watch this video of Wasabi + Primestream asset management and automation platform to see what’s possible when your video production process is powered by Wasabi.
Broadcasters and studios archive their raw and finished video assets, which might be needed for a future project, for an anniversary re-issue or for perusing old footage for new ideas. Content also needs to be preserved for historical records. Traditionally, content owners have relied on LTO tape for long-term bulk storage. But LTO comes with a host of hidden costs, including hardware maintenance, technology upgrades, human capital, and expenses for power, space and cooling. And content retrieval from LTO libraries can also be time consuming–the tape must first be available in the robotic library, and the library itself must be free of any other jobs that might block the content retrieval.
More recently, content owners have turned to the cloud for long-term archiving using “cold storage” services like Amazon Glacier. While the per-TB charge for the storage itself may look compelling at first, it’s the additional, hidden charges for “data operations” and “data transfer” that balloon these service costs, making it difficult to budget for long-term storage. Furthermore, it can take 12 hours or more to retrieve content from these cold storage services. That’s not particularly helpful when a director needs a reference to a prior project or the latest social trend suddenly finds you needing a TV episode from the 90s.
Data that resides on direct access storage media, is readily visible to the operating system or application with which it was created and is immediately accessible to users. This data is regularly in use and is frequently backed up so that it remains accessible if it is lost or corrupted.
Data that’s too valuable to discard but is only accessed occasionally.
Data that’s unlikely to be accessed again, but must be kept for compliance, legal, regulatory, or other business reasons.
Wasabi hot cloud storage changes the game in archiving. By offering a single tier of high-performance storage, all content stored in Wasabi is immediately accessible, whenever you need it. And Wasabi also performs faster than the competition, so you can always access your assets quickly and beat your competition to the eyes of the viewer.
Still watching that bottom line? Wasabi is priced comparably to Amazon Glacier, Amazon’s traditional archive tier. However, Wasabi has no charges for egress or API requests, so you can access your archives anytime you like without paying a penalty.
Finally, you can afford to store it all—unused cuts, CGI, animations, 3D renderings and any other content you might one day want to dust off for another look.
Plus, by taking advantage of Wasabi’s immutable buckets, you have peace of mind knowing that files will not be lost, deleted, altered or hacked in any way, no matter how long you store them.
Movie and television production is no longer confined to specific facilities and production company employees. Today, it is far more common for virtual teams to work on projects where editing, sound, VFX and related work is performed by independent artists who may be scattered around the globe. The cloud has become a convenient collaboration point for these geo-dispersed teams and is far more efficient and reliable than transferring files back and forth between artists.
Wasabi provides a convenient and highly accessible repository for production work-in-progress. With performance faster than competitors, Wasabi ensures that content files are available to work on or for a quick review, no matter where you are located.
Rest assured that when a story breaks, you can produce content on the fly. Because news happens at a second’s notice, production teams need fast access to new video as well as archived footage. Video clips need to be edited, shared and posted as quickly as possible—preferably before the competition. Wasabi provides a cost-effective platform to collaborate on multiple stories and help you keep up with the relentless pace of the 24/7 news cycle.
Backup and Disaster Recovery
In today’s fast-paced, high-stakes digital world, video producers can’t afford to lose any raw footage, rough cuts or finished material before the final product is in the can. It’s an uncomfortable truth, but hardware failures, mishaps, misplaced drives, theft and natural disasters are common occurrences. M&E firms need a fail-safe backup strategy that ensures they can rapidly retrieve media work when things go wrong. Of course, this bottom-line protection needs to be affordable as well.
Wasabi is a critical component of any complete media backup strategy. By continuously updating copies of your work to Wasabi, you are protected from localized events and disasters that can affect any backup copies that may be stored near the original material. At a price that is 80% less expensive and faster than the competition, Wasabi makes it possible for media producers to limit or even bypass on-premise backup storage and replicate straight to the cloud. Wasabi helps media companies reduce risk, save money and maintain the fast pace of their business.
IQ Media is a media analytics technology company that uses advanced AI image recognition and text detection to help brands better assess their marketing and public relations programs. Customers use the company’s platform to track every time their brand is mentioned, or their logo appears, then correlate that data with their various media tactics, sponsored events, and PR initiatives.
This kind of intelligence requires a lot of data. The company currently manages six petabytes (PB) of information and ingests another six terabytes (TB) of new programming daily. It was quickly outgrowing its on-premises storage infrastructure and looked to the cloud so that it could get out of the storage business and into focusing on its core analytics business. Wasabi was the clear winner on price, and IQ Media accelerated migrating its content to Wasabi hot cloud storage using the Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance, which allowed the company to move about 400 TB a week.

Media Management and Content Delivery
Broadcasters, studios, and production houses have huge volumes of content to manage, and they need more efficient ways to do it. The marketing arm of one of the world’s largest broadcasting companies, for example, needed a faster and more economical system for retrieving archived promotional footage, transcoding it and transferring it on demand to wherever it was needed around the globe. The broadcaster turned to Wasabi for low-cost, high-performance hot cloud storage integrated with a media management application made by Wasabi partner Acembly.
The broadcast group uses the Acembly software to find and access the files it needs across the Wasabi storage environment and to quickly transcode files into any video format with a few clicks. Then, the click of a “share” button sends the files on their way anywhere in the world. There’s no more need to schedule a time for assets to be retrieved and become available to the group’s external clients.
Production, Promotion and Active Archiving
7 Wonders Cinema operates both as a production company and an agency, creating video campaigns for the content it distributes across the U.S.. As the company expanded, it gradually maxed out every hard drive it owned plus multiple Google Drive accounts. While it considered going to a higher tier of service with Google or Amazon, the company said the need to occasionally access its stored footage made those choices “astronomically expensive.” The company often pulls archived video for new projects, making time-intensive and pricier cloud storage tiers from Google and Amazon economically out of reach.
When it calculated that storing about 100 GB on Google cost the same as storing a terabyte on Wasabi, moving its content to Wasabi became “a no-brainer.” Typical archive storage can take hours before you can download a single byte, and that wasn’t going to cut it for 7 Wonders. The company said it was working on a new project for a luxury car dealer, and when the client suddenly asked for a scene from an earlier video project, retrieving it from Wasabi was so fast, “it was like having an active archive.”
